The Occidental Table Of Houses

"Astrology can be neatly and sharply divided into two parts : computation and interpretation. The computational side involves determination of planet positions at a given moment, finding which point on the ecliptic intersects the rational horizon, etc. Regardless of one's belief in the validity of astrology, there is very little room for dispute when it comes to computation.

Astrological computations are the same as astronomical and navigational computations, differing primarily in the notation used. Interpretation, however, is another matter altogether. Once a horoscope has been cast (which, by the way, is a computational process that even an astronomer would accept as valid), the question is, What does it mean ? The answers to this question range from Nothing to Everything, depending on one's point of view and personal experiments with astrology, but regardless of the answer given, the very process of answering the question is astrological interpretation.

Going from the general to the specific, it is clear that the topic of astrological houses is best dealt with in two parts : the computational side and the interpretational side. The latter subject can be studied in great detail in any number of astrological texts, and it is so fraught with controversy that we prefer to focus on the computational side, so that once the reader has decided which house system is best, he will at least know the astronomical-mathematical basis of the system he has chosen."
